Q Reading Questions 1. What do you find most unsettling about the dystopian society of Orwell's 1984 thusfar? 2. In "Why I Write," Orwell is self-deprecatingly honest. Offer an example of this refreshing honesty--a great trait for a writer. 3. Choose a famous writer you're familiar with and try to decide which of the four motives Orwell mentions is most important to his or her work. What are Thoreau's motives? 4. When was 1984 written and what was it a response to? Why is it controversial? What issues does it bring to bear that remind you of current events here in 2021? 5. In dystopian literature, the setting often functions as a character and the characters themselves are relatively flat. Is this the case with 1984? 6. Reading Questions 1. In 1984 the most unsettling thing that stood out the most to me was the children's behavior, they were like little demons, even their parents were afraid of them. 2. An example of Orwell’s self deprecating honesty is when he said “Sheer egoism. Desire to seem clever,” not too many people would admit to this selfish desire even though everyone has it. Yet Orwell not only says he has this desire when he writes but says it in an article that anyone can read.
